Home Organizing Tips

Closets:

are fun and easy. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  • The very first thing you should do in your closet, is to get rid of ALL colored hangers. Using as few colors as possible will make an amazing improvement! Use wood, white, metal, clear, etc.
  • Sort all your long clothes and hang them on one side.
  • Sort all your short clothes, like with like; dressy, casual, pants, jackets, shirts.
  • While you are sorting, donate any item you haven’t worn this year and anything that does not fit. If you must keep smaller clothes, bin them and store them with off-season items.
  • When you do this, you will find lots of space under your short clothes. If you have many more short items, then add another 3/4 length pole in that space. If you have many more shoes, then add a shoe cubby.
  • If you have extra room on your poles, consider adding a 13″ wide cubby tower on one side for folded items like sweaters.
  • Tip: When you change seasons, put all your hangers in backwards. When you wear an item, hang it correctly. Any item with a backwards hanger at the end of the season gets donated.
  • Tip: I found the best deal on wooden hangers at Target; 24 nice hangers for only $12.99. Here’s the link to Target Hangers

Kitchens:

Organizing your utensils:

If you have one monster utensil drawer, you need to rethink it. Utensils come in several categories:

  • Stovetop Utensils: Wooden spoons, spatulas, ladles, etc.
  • Baking Utensils: rubber spatulas, whisks, measuring spoons, etc.
  • Knifes and Peelers: Knives, sharpeners, peelers, etc.
  • Flatware: daily spoons, forks, butter knives, etc.
  • Other: corkscrews, garlic press, corn on the cob holders.

If you can separate these utensils and store them in the area where you use them, you will save countless steps finding and using them:

  • Knives in prep area with cutting boards
  • Stovetop utensils next to stovetop
  • Baking utensils in baking area with canisters and mixer
  • Flatware near dishwasher
  • Other, anywhere
