How to Stop Wasting Money

From my e-newsletter 2/2/2009

According to the Wall Street Journal, the CEO of Goldman Sachs earned $69 million in 2007. I didn’t, and I’m definitely more prudent about my spending these days.

Last week, while organizing a business client’s desk, we found an overdue RFP;  a hot lead turned into a lost opportunity. Wasted time and energy, lost money. If we’re too late, the stories are about wasted money:

  • “What’s in that box? Oh… Brand new running shoes and I just bought another pair.”
  • “I can’t believe all this food is expired. What a waste of money, just because my pantry wasn’t organized.”
  • “Ugh, I just bought a new box of toner, (folders, labels, etc.) because I didn’t see those in the supply cabinet.”
  • “I didn’t email back to this prospective listing in time and he listed with someone else.”
  • “Uh Oh, that bill is overdue. Now, I’ll have late charges.”
  • “We bought 5 gallons of new primer when we painted the house. I didn’t realize we had some down here.”

If the client calls in time, the stories are about saved money:

  • “I saved money this week because my son needed some new ski pants and I found him a pair in the winter clothes we organized!”
  • “I saved money last week because my daughter needed a book for school and I found a copy in the books we organized.”
  • “Now that my closet is organized, I save so much time in the morning that I’m getting to work earlier.”
  • “There are those golf shoes! I’ve been looking for those. Now I don’t have to buy another pair.”
  • “My cash flow looks great because I got my AR system organized!”
  • “My staff is more organized, more efficient and above all, re-energized!”

It’s easy to waste money, just don’t do a thing and it flys right out of your hands and into the shop owner’s or competition’s hands.

You have tons of unused resources right in your own office or home. You will save money by getting organized and improving your focus. Wouldn’t you rather use that extra money for a vacation instead of wasting it on duplicated purchases and efforts?
